Wolf Creek Pump Station & Gravity Sewer
Peachtree Corners, Georgia
Lakeshore Engineering was contracted by the Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources to perform critical upgrades to Wolf Creek’s existing pump station within a nature park along the Chattahoochee River.
Due to the site's sensitive environmental and public use characteristics, the project involved extensive collaboration between Lakeshore, the county, the park service, and community stakeholders to ensure minimal environmental disruption, community engagement, and park activities. Public meetings were held regularly to inform park users, address visitor questions, and maintain transparency regarding construction activities.
The team constructed a new electrical building and implemented a carefully orchestrated service changeover that prevented any disruption to pump station operations. Installing new generators and electrical equipment significantly improved the station's operational efficiency. The upgrade also included larger capacity pumps, enhanced piping systems, and a state-of-the-art surge tank system, complemented by new valves, gates, and an advanced chemical feed system.
The most technically challenging aspect of the project involved constructing a 500,000-gallon concrete emergency storage tank. With its 17-foot-tall walls buried 7 feet underground, this structure required intricate engineering solutions.
Rock Excavation: The excavation process encountered significant bedrock, necessitating controlled blasting to remove 5,000 cubic yards of rock. By incorporating sustainable construction practices, this rock was crushed and repurposed on-site, which reduced environmental impact and material costs.
Soil Conservation: The project team managed substantial earthwork operations, moving 30,000 cubic yards of soil to be repurposed to enhance park features.
Groundwater Management: The project required us to continuously operate an extensive dewatering system for over a year to maintain stable ground conditions and protect the surrounding ecosystem.
